Alright so

October 12th, 2009

I just got done making sure my stuff is all in one place for the next couple of days. Today is a relax day but I’m going to hit a couple of bay area open mics. Gonna try to finally make it to the open mic at Tommy T’s, I’ve done a guest set there but still have yet to make it to the open mic. Then I’m gonna hit Bliss bar and then go see if Big Al will “show me some love” over at Club Deluxe. I don’t really even care if it’s at the end. I just want to have a night to work out and see what’s what. I’m doing a college on Wednesday somewhere in Minnesota and that should be fun but I know I have to play a little with the order of my set. I’m going with Justin Berkman and it’s a show for the Gay Straight Alliance and probably related to the fact that we just passed National Coming Out day.

Then I’m coming back to San Francisco to do Thursday-Saturday with Senor Jo Koy. If you want to come out to those hurry and get your tickets all shows are already sold out except for the Thursday 10p.

Update: Got back from Tommy T’s a couple hours ago didn’t know it was really a contest. Thought it was a different situation I guess. Had a good set but didn’t get to do what I really wanted to do which was Tommy’s, Bliss Bar, Deluxe. I went up number 20 but thought it would go by sooner. After my set I just wanted to leave and try to make it to the city but on my way I realized I would’ve missed all of Deluxe anyway. FML

So I haven’t really been

October 6th, 2009

paying much attention to the computer or Twitter or any of that stuff the last couple of days. I needed to clean up the apartment I was living in so I could get, hopefully, all of my deposit back. I’m pretty much done and my new apartment looks great. There are some new rules. I no longer can smoke in my apartment. My smoking is, once again, out of hand and when I’m at home it’s ridiculous. I organized EVERYTHING, threw a lot of stuff away, took some stuff to Goodwill and left some stuff in the hallway for other tenants to have.

I was starting to become a true pack rat so I had to throw things away from when I first got to LA and stupid stuff like receipts to Taco Bell, so stupid. It took me all of three night of seriously working to get rid of all the clutter and file what needed to be filed and then my dishes had been in storage for like 6 years so they were all dusty and needed to be washed and I noticed a lot of stuff I didn’t need there too so some of that got thrown away and some is going to Goodwill tomorrow. Then I had quite a bit of laundry to take care of. I will tell you about my schedule in tomorrow’s post and why it was so important that I get all of this stuff organized now because it’s kinda’ ridiculous and I feel this post is going to be long enough. Tonight I made my first dinner and that was pretty great.

Alright peeps, I gotta sleep now they’re moving my internet at 8am :-)

For some reason

October 2nd, 2009

I kept updating my facebook status today and I made it so my Twitter now updates my myspace. I ended up getting to do 3 spots and have really been on the grind because I’m working hard on the new stuff and trying to find ways to get into and out of it and also working on some REALLY REALLY new stuff that’s fun but not my usual style. It feels very natural though so I’m not really feeling like I’m FORCING myself but just kinda’ what I’m growing into.

So I woke up at about 1p and got a text from Gretchen saying that she was hosting the open mic at Verrazano’s. It’s a pizza place on La Brea that I am not giving the link to but only because I don’t think they are going to be having the open there anymore. It was supposed to start at 3pm and didn’t end up starting til 4 and there were only 3 comics including the host Gretchen so it was a weak turnout. I did my set anyway and had as good a time as you can have with that small of a room. I came home took a shower and did my hurr and headed out to Sunset Grill. Went up first there and then hung out for a couple comics.

Came home finished getting ready and went out to the, You’ve Seen These Guys show at the Jon Lovitz Comedy Club. That show was fun and I had a good set but it ran a little late so as soon as my set was done I was ready to go. I went to Akbar and hung out with Jens, Stephen and Jojo but Duane and Tyler weren’t in attendance so that part of it wasn’t good. I don’t go to Akbar for the music or the dancing and I hardly ever drink when I’m there so if I don’t get to see all of my crew it makes it a bit disappointing.

Tomorrow is the big…I think. I’ll keep you posted. I don’t want to bitch about anything right now but I promise tomorrow I will be back to my regular self but for now I’m just tired and want to relax. Love you all mucho and goodnight :-)

I was doing some research and found this

October 1st, 2009

You’ve gotten the invitation for your friends’ wedding, happily circled the date on your calendar and started shopping for their gift, when all of a sudden it hits you – what are you supposed to wear???

Yup folks, I have a wedding to go to. It’s not until the 25th but I will be there :-) I usually hate weddings because they are long and boring but I REALLY love these people. I haven’t known them long but it doesn’t take me long to figure out whether or not I’m gonna be REAL FRIENDS with someone. I’m going to make sure to dress the way I should and be in a good mood even though it starts at…oh shit…I just looked at the invitation and it starts at 3p :-) I love it…I knew I liked these people for a reason. I gotta figure out what I’m gonna wear. THIS IS GOING TO BE GREAT.

So in other news, I ended up doing four spots tonight I did the Spot in Culver City, the Bliss (again), the Terrace in Pasadena and finally ended up at the Zoo. For anybody wondering why I’m adding links to these and listing the rooms it’s so if an open micer wants to ask me where I go, or some of the places I go to, like they tend to do, I can direct them to my blog. It’s an easy way for me to avoid having to answer the same things over and over.

Some people might wonder what the point is of doing the Bliss two nights in a row is and this is the reason. Bliss has two completely different vibes depending on the night. Like Tuesday is Dave Corrado’s night. Dave is cool and chill…kinda’ and the room tends to be a bit more on the “supportive” side. Great for working out material but you have to get there hella early because the sign up is at 6 but a lot of people get there by 5:15 and the open mic doesn’t even start until 7. Like I said it can be great for working out material but it’s gonna take a bit of a time investment.

When it’s Wednesday that’s Maurice King’s night and it tends to be a bit more “urban”…LOL!!!! I love Wednesdays because a lot of the comics aren’t even in the room but you just go up and do your time. Maybe nobody’s paying attention, maybe some people are paying attention from outside, it forces you to think and to just work on stuff. You DON’T feel like a superstar but it’s great. I can honestly say most of the comics that go to Bliss are my friends. Especially on Wednesdays like Maurice, Fu, Dbey, Henry Coleman, Rell Battle, Kristin Brock will sometimes make an appearance, Lara Csengody, Julia Lovetere, Dan the Man, Daugne Keith and of course Martin (pronounced the Mexican way). I love Martin and his wife Reyna and the whole situation down there.

Oh yeah, while I’m on the subject, I was on Yelp yesterday and read a review where a guy badmouthed the Bliss and I wouldn’t mind if he were bagging on real shit like the fact that they stopped carrying Krispy Creams but he was saying that it was roach infested and fecal something or other and I will tell you that is NOT TRUE I don’t drink coffee so I’m not gonna act like they’re serving up the best cup of joe in the city because I wouldn’t know and if you were to say that I wouldn’t be able to argue but I KNOW clean and I KNOW dirty and I don’t eat in dirty places. I eat in Bliss, I perform in Bliss, I hang out at Bliss and I can tell you it is NOT a dirty place. Martin is on top of those dishes and wiping down counters and the tables don’t have crumbs all over them, it’s clean and they now have soft serve ice cream. Btw, I woulda’ put this on yelp but I didn’t want it to turn into a “flaming” situation or some bullshit I just thought it was important to mention to you guys. Anyway, nitey nite.

So here we are again

September 30th, 2009

It’s early on Wednesday morning and I’m blogging. Earlier tonight I did five spots. It was kinda’ hectic but I had to keep myself on task. I was able to make it to the Improv open mic, Bliss Art house Cafe, Westwood Brew Co, Hollywood Billiards and Michael’s Pub. After that I went to Denny’s to catch up with Saas followed by the Comedy Store to hang out. Some people don’t really understand why I would do as many open mics as I do when I get plenty of “real shows” but I HAVE TO keep working on new stuff and make sure when people come out to see me they get to see new things and don’t get tired of my “act”. Besides I’m lucky enough to love what I do so I WANT to always be working on new stuff and finding reasons for people to laugh when I’m on stage. I also get along really well with MOST of the other comics. I only capitalize the word “most” because there are a few people I don’t care for but that’s in everybody’s life. If you like EVERYBODY then there’s a good chance you’re being fake and I can think of somebody you won’t be hitting off with and that’s me. See how I just ruined your perfect record :-/ Not to be rude but I’m always leery of the people that want to be friends with EVERYBODY. Maybe it’s just me but that’s the way I feel.

So anyway, I’m getting ready to move to another apartment but in this same building. I currently live in a bachelor that doesn’t have a kitchen. I’m cool with my apartment and the size of it the only thing I need is a kitchen so I’m moving into a studio. I really do love my place and it’s location so I’m glad I’ll be able to still live here. I’m pretty excited about it but know it is going to be a bit of work.

So tomorrow is a lot more open mics and then Thursday is the show at the Jon Lovitz Club

Why this question is so annoying

September 29th, 2009

Ok, so the shows at Club Nokia were really fun. All of us got along really well and since everyone was naturally funny offstage it was easy for us to have a good time. The make-up artist, her friend/assistant and the stylist were all really fun and cool. The food was good, friends showed up, I had two REALLY fun sets and everything was GREAT.

Two people I already knew and was VERY HAPPY about working with were Felipe Esparza and DJ Cooch. Felipe I knew about but Cooch was doing warm up (not in any of the advertising) so when I saw him I was surprised. I didn’t stick around for the after party because I had gotten there at 2:30pm and had just came off the Eureka trip the night before. My schedule has been kinda’ crazy but I’m alright with it. Sometimes I forget things and I just got back to the gym today but it’s taking me a bit to get fully organized and used to my life while having to live it at the same time.

This week I am pretty much off so that’s cool. Just a lot of open mics but it makes it a lot easier to maneuver around so it should all work out. I didn’t put in for spots anywhere because I knew I had a lot of stuff to do in the next couple of days, and all together, before I leave again.

Ok, so switching gears. More and more people are asking how to get on the road. This is a hard question for me to answer because I only know what I have done and it’s this, A SHIT LOAD OF OPEN MICS. Then people SAW ME at those and ASKED ME to do booked shows. Then other people SAW ME AT THOSE and asked me to do other booked shows. Then, at the same time, I was doing contest and still open mics, and the booked shows and EVERYTHING in between for quite sometime and then people slowly started ASKING ME to go on the road and I met bookers and they would ask me to come back on my own and good comics just OUT OF NOWHERE a lot of times would drop my name and help me get hooked up with more stuff and now we’re at today. I’m still trying to figure it all out myself so it makes it kind of annoying that people keep asking me. Simply put, get out there and see who you meet or what you just find ON YOUR OWN. Contrary to what most people believe the LA “open mic” comedy scene can be quite friendly and a lot of comics will tell you about other places to go you just HAVE TO do the leg work for YOURSELF.

I gotta go now. Take care, folky dolkys.

Alright

September 25th, 2009

I’m watching Ultimate Fighter and it’s pretty faggy and not the OBVIOUS kinda’ faggy that people think of. I’m gonna make a bit about it so I won’t say too much, try not to defuse it. So today I got a lot of sleep and then I had to take C Sto to pick up his car in San Jose. We went to eat sushi it was good but not mind blowing, drop a name and include a link, type shit.

I ended up hitting shitty Bay area traffic on my way to the city (San Francisco) and that sucked but I was on my way to the Brain Wash and really wanted to squeeze in at least one open mic while I was in the area. I think while I was there I either got pick pocketed or dropped something…pretty sure I was pick pocketed.

Anyway, nothing important was taken so let’s move on. Tomorrow I have to be up early to get to the “meeting spot” so we can head out to Eureka >. I hate getting up early but sometimes I HAVE TO do it. The other thing I hate is I have to take BART and I am not good with public transportation and always feel like taxis are gonna try to jack. The cats are still around but a little less annoying or at least out of my way. My set at Brain Wash was SUPER FUN but I’m working on new stuff so it was a bit scary :-/

I’ll be posting some footage soon on my youtube but not of stand up. I really don’t like posting stand up on youtube. I feel that if people want to see me they can come see me. You have to come out to get the stuff that I can’t do on TV. I post things that I think are fun like me and my friends messing around or my little dumb nephews. I’ll work on it when I’m back in LA or maybe from a remote location. I’ll do it when I have a free moment, how’s that? I mean you guys are pressuring me AND I CAN’T DEAL WITH IT!!!! Ok, I’m sorry I snapped. Igonna try not to do it on my new blog but you guys pushed and I broke…let’s not make a habit of this. Dismissed :-)

I just made it

September 24th, 2009

into Oakland a few minutes ago and I’m hating life. I usually love being over here but Storin got two kittens and I FUCKING HATE CATS. I hate the way they jump around and scratch shit, I hate EVERYTHING about them. Sure, I’ve met a few cool cats in my time but for the most part I think they are true piece of shit animals. I love dogs and birds and if you don’t like either of those I’m fine with that. Just don’t tell me how I should think kittens are so cute. Cute too look at, agreed, to be around, no thanks :-/

Other than that things are pretty great. I decided to get in early just to make sure everything goes off Friday without a hitch. I’m supposed to be in San Francisco at some Safeway to meet up with Marga and Marty to head up to the show in Eureka. I don’t really know much about it other than, it’s a gay themed show and Marga is headlining. I’m featuring and more than anything people I’ve talked to are surprised they’re doing a gay show in Eureka.

Saturday, I’ll be heading back down to LA and then Sunday are the two big shows I’m doing with Gene Pompa and Felipe Esparza . I’m pretty excited about doing them but kind of nervous too. It’s a taping and the Nokia is a pretty great venue but whatever I’m nervous before a lot of stuff so I know I’ll get through it and probably have fun.

Alright so the drive was pretty uneventful and tomorrow I’m just open mic-ing in SF and that’s about it. Alrighty then I’m gonna make mimi now and I don’t wanna hear SHIT ABOUT IT. Nitey-nite :-) Read the rest of this entry »

Okay, I admit it,

September 23rd, 2009

I’m a liar. I said I would blog more and I haven’t. I’ve been SUPER BUSY living life and getting my place in order. I’m supposed to be moving into another apartment in my same building and have been picking up quite a few gigs as well as hitting the open mic scene pretty hard.

I’m a bit tired of being asked the same questions though. I don’t mean to but sometimes I get a bit bitchy with the other comics but it just gets annoying hearing the same question, how was Gotham, what rooms do you go up in, and a few more that don’t come to my mind because when you snap at people it tends to shut shit down. Sometimes people think I’m full of myself because I act that way and it’s not that. I just do a bunch of shit and once I’ve done something I’m done with and it was great but I don’t want to tell the story over and over. The worst part is a lot of times when people ask these questions it’s not even out of being happy for you they end up asking if you know how they can get on, if you have a contact for them, SAME BULLSHIT. I try to be patient but I don’t really get it because I don’t really ask other comics about that stuff. If people think something is good for you or can help you they usually just volunteer it, in my experience. You don’t have to bug them, or corner them, or ask twenty questions.

Anyway, things are going great when it comes down to it and life is good. I’ve got two shows coming up this Sunday at Club Nokia and those should be fun and I’m also performing in Eureka, which in that link, I’ll add, it says nothing about me it’s AAAALLLLLLL ABBBOOOUUUTTT MARGA, MARGA, MARGA, MARGA. What am I chopped liver? The Jan Brady of the gay comedy world. If I had a publicist THIS SHIT WOULDN’T HAPPEN!!!! Anyway, I’ve collected myself and will say if you know anybody in the area forward the flier to them. It’s gonna be a hoot and I do LOVE Marga Gomez she’s VERY FUNNY.

Alright so now I promise to continue to update my blog if some of you promise to read it :-)

Welcome

August 27th, 2009

Okay guys, right now I’m typing on the blog of what’s going to be my new website. There’s still a bit more work to be done but for right now this is where we’re at and I’m happy with the way it’s coming along. I’ve been having to handle a lot of stuff from hotel rooms and airports and basically wherever I can send stuff to the guy doing it. After he’s done I’ll hook you all up with his contact info in case any of you need some stuff done but for now I doubt he would want his name connected with a half finished product.

So anyway, speaking of airports I am currently at LAX waiting to start my journey to Wilmington, NC. I’m doing an over night flight which I love the idea of but will get back to you once I’ve experienced the reality of it. Tonight I took the flyaway to get here because I would rather pay $4 a day for parking than 8 or 9. While I was on the bus I met a really great Romanian lady that was telling me all about her life and how she got here and learned English. The whole thing was a pretty exciting story and it was really nice talking to her. When it was time for me to go I had this weird urge to hug her but at last minute got a hold of myself and gave her the appropriate handshake. Life is pretty great guys and I promise to be good about using my new blog and to let you all know about the exciting things going on in my life. For now I’m gonna start to pack my stuff up because I’ve kinda’ taken over this corner of the waiting area. Take care everyone :-)
